Cash in on Your Clutter: 15 Best Apps to Sell Used Stuff
As someone who goes through a seasonal cycle of decluttering, selling, and donating, I am an expert on the best apps to sell used stuff. There are several e-commerce platforms for selling various household items, but several niche sites might give you a bigger return. Among a few other apps, here are my favorites for selling clutter.
Facebook Marketplace
Facebook Marketplace is the best place to sell your things online to local buyers. It makes it simple to meet up with people who can see the condition of your item and pay you cash on the spot.
The only caveat with Facebook Marketplace is that there are far too many people on it who are complete flakes. So, be prepared to have possible no-shows or cancellations. Still, it’s worth it sometimes if you’re in a pinch for fast cash.
eBay
eBay might be the perfect site for you, depending on what you have to sell around your home. It’s an auction-style e-commerce platform where potential buyers bid on your goods, including clothes, electronics, collectibles, sports memorabilia, and cars.
OfferUp
I have a love-and-hate relationship with OfferUp, but it’s again because of no-shows and people who want to nickel and dime every purchase. I once had a man ask me to reduce the price of my AirPods because it was Christmas time.
I said no, and he came to the meetup spot with insufficient money, thinking I’d agree in person. I did not. But that’s not OfferUp’s fault, and you can expect it in any local buy-and-sell marketplace.
Letgo
Letgo is another buy-and-sell app I’ve used to unload some of my seasonal clutter. Like the other e-commerce platforms, it allows you to sell various household items and clothing. However, it comes with a lot of notifications and has a poorer interface than some of the others on the list.
RubyLane
Ruby Lane is the perfect app to sell used stuff that is vintage. From vintage furniture and lighting to jewelry, dolls, porcelain, silver, art, and other collectibles, you should try selling your vintage items through Ruby Lane first.
Nextdoor
One of the best apps for selling stuff quickly is Nextdoor. Nextdoor is a neighborhood app that connects you with your locals and allows you to sell your used belongings.
I’ve had success selling furniture in my community on this app, but again, it comes with excessive email notifications if you don’t change your settings.
VarageSale
VarageSale is a super cool website for selling used stuff. It lets you hold virtual garage sales and buy and sell things locally. It’s also one of the few e-commerce stores that strongly emphasizes safety and security. They verify every member with their real name and profile picture.
Chairish
Interior designers and tastemakers shop Chairish for contemporary, rare, and vintage pieces. Their curators screen everything.
I love how their website explains their philosophy: “Every time you rechairish something, be it a space-age lamp or a lavish tiger-print rug or a velvety sofa or a rare art book, you’re extending its life and contributing to a kinder, more circular economy.”
eCampus
Are you a college or former student with old textbooks lying around? You may fetch a fairer price at eCampus, where the buyers are in the market for what you’re selling.
Sellers receive an instant quote with a free shipping label. You can opt for payment via direct deposit, check, PayPal, or store credit. Store credit is the most significant value if you are in the market for more textbooks.
Mercari
Mercari is another favorite place to declutter my closets, cabinets, and corners. It’s easy to list. There are no seller fees. They have buyer fees instead. They also have the option to set up an at-home pickup for shipments for USPS, UPS, and FedEx, which is awesome for introverts who don’t want to leave the house!
Decluttr
Decluttr is a popular online platform for selling technology, including Apple or Android phones, tablets, iPads, MacBooks, Apple Watches, and video game consoles. It also allows you to sell physical media, including CDs, DVDs, and Blu-rays.
Gazelle
Gazelle is a buy-and-sell app for smartphones and tablets. If you have one to sell, they will inspect and certify the used electronics before reselling them on their platform. I’ve not personally used this one, but I’ve read reviews suggesting they pay a decent price.
Swappa
Swappa is a peer-to-peer marketplace where you can sell tech like phones, tablets, laptops, and video game consoles. They made selling my Xbox a cinch. However, they also have a cool collection of shoes and sneakers. So, if you are a sneakerhead, you can make some decent money selling here.
Stillwhite
Stillwhite is a unique secondhand selling site that allows brides to resell their gently used wedding dresses. Their head office is in Sydney, Australia. However, they do ship internationally.
Poshmark
Poshmark is one of the most popular apps to sell used stuff straight out of your closet. While I have successfully sold things quickly on the platform, they take a 20% commission, which is considerably higher than other places to sell clothes.
Key Takeaway
Finding the right e-commerce platform or app for what you’re selling will help you maximize profits. If you need money immediately, selling on Facebook Marketplace and OfferUp locally may be your best bet.
