15 Professions That Get the Most Hate Just for Doing Their Jobs
Let’s face it: some professions get a ton of hate for people simply doing their jobs. For example, who honestly respects bill collectors? It’s a job and one that needs to be done. However, one can only imagine the disrespect they receive when ringing up people demanding money. Here are several other professions that often get the short end of the stick.
1. Cashiers
Without a doubt, many cashiers are berated and belittled daily, primarily for things that are outside of their control, such as corporate policy and prices. Can you imagine hearing hundreds of people complaining about gas prices at you all day as if you have any control over it?
2. Truckers
There should be a special part of driver’s education courses, and the test should include driving around semi-trucks. The number of close calls I’ve seen is shocking. People honk, scream, and rage at truck drivers who are doing their jobs and following their regulations, like reduced speed limits.
Moreover, they make dangerous driving decisions that cause truckers anxiety because they can’t do anything to make their truck slow down faster, but people want to jump right in without regard to the fact.
3. Customer Support
Awe, yes, customer support: where work capabilities are judged on your ability to help someone while they are screaming and cursing at you about things that are not your fault and outside your control.
4. Retail Workers
Retail workers everywhere are accosted daily. Can you imagine working on Black Friday or during any holiday season? After seeing numerous videos of disrespectful shoppers, this is one job I couldn’t do.
These poor workers, many of whom are minimum wage employees, get yelled at, threatened, spit on, and have things thrown at them, and some have dealt with customers physically assaulting them over trivial things.
5. Social Workers
Social workers get a ton of hate and disrespect for doing their jobs because sometimes they step in and take kids out of the home. But that is not all they are doing. Instead, many of them are putting in long hours dealing with horrific situations of violent parents and frightened children for incredibly low pay, considering. This job comes with nightmares for many.
6. Teachers
Teachers are one of the most undervalued and underpaid professions in America, and it often comes with verbal, physical, and emotional abuse. From students, parents, and even administrators. No wonder 20 to 30 percent fewer people are going into teaching each year than there were even a decade ago.
7. Veterinarians
There is an unfair negative stigma around veterinarians about “being in it for the money” when most are genuinely invested in animals and their care. It’s a stressful job that involves euthanizing and the intense emotions of the owners there with their pets.
The veterinarian technicians deal with so much of the rude public, too. The entire profession receives a ton of hate on people who are just doing their jobs.
8. Lawyers
Everyone hates a lawyer until they need one, sometimes even when they need one. Lawyers may be one of the most hated professions in America.
In addition to dealing with that stigma, sometimes they pour hard work and hours into a case, and it doesn’t get their client the desired results. As a result, they are often belittled and threatened with the statement: “I’m not paying you; you didn’t get me what I wanted!”
9. Parking Enforcement
Parking enforcement employees receive hate for ticketing vehicles that are in violation or have overstayed their paid welcome. People don’t accept the consequences of their actions as quickly as they berate this profession of people doing their jobs well and issuing citations for violations.
10. Fast Food Workers
Fast food workers make many mistakes, likely because they are young kids and/or don’t make enough to put up with people throwing food, drinks, and even chairs over these order mess-ups in their establishments. Have you seen any of the Waffle House videos of irate customers? Wow.
11. Referees
From professional sports fans to ridiculous parents at kid games, referees receive a ton of hate, screaming, threats, and curse words hurled in their direction.
12. Nurses
From handling messy bodily functions to being punched in the face or hit in the head with a urinal pan, nurses deal with a ton of hate when doing their jobs.
13. Police Officers
Just like lawyers, people hate police officers until they need one, and sometimes, even then. The entire force is lumped into the very real issue of police brutality that’s been highlighted over and over again. Additionally, they “ruin” a lot of commuters who won’t follow the speed laws days with tickets.
14. Servers
Food service workers are another profession the public believes is acceptable to belittle, criticize, and verbally attack over trivial mistakes and things outside their control. For example, one busy Saturday night, when I was serving at Olive Garden, a large party was sat in my section.
When I approached the table to take their beverage order, the man interrupted me to inform me that I would not receive a tip because they had to wait over an hour to be seated—something entirely out of my control. So I went ahead and ensured that all of my other table’s needs were taken care of over his family, making sure to really earn my zero-dollar tip.
15. Mechanics
Believe it or not, there are some honest mechanics out there. However, the majority of them are treated like they are all shady and out for a payday instead of charging what it’s really worth to fix the car.
