15 Common Things In Your House You Can Sell for Fast Money

Are you looking for things in your house you can sell to turn a quick profit? I am a pro at decluttering, reselling, and donating household items. Over the years, I’ve used several brick-and-mortar and online platforms to make easy money.

Places You Can Sell Secondhand Household Items

When decluttering, I have reasonable success selling my gently used secondhand items on Facebook Marketplace. If you’re not already part of your local groups, search Facebook for your city + sell group. But be warned, the platform has many flaky people who disregard your time with excuses and no-shows.

Others find luck selling on platforms like Etsy and eBay. Numerous niche direct-buyer marketplaces exist, such as Decluttr for electronics and Poshmark for clothing. OfferUp is another popular app that I’ve experienced some success on.

What Things in Your House You Can Sell to Make Money?

The best things in your house you can sell to make money are gently used or in open-box condition. Most direct-buyer selling platforms have buyer protection to ensure you’re not misrepresenting your goods.

1. Jewelry

Where you’ll make the most money selling your jewelry largely depends on the type of jewelry you are looking to sell. If you need money immediately, pawn shops give cash on the same day. But you’ll likely find a fairer price on modern pieces at your local jewelry store or consignment shop. For vintage or antique pieces, search for specialized markets like Worthy.

2. Electronics

Electronics are a bigger ticket item for reselling, depending on their relevance and worth. For the quickest cash, I’d post straight to Facebook Marketplace. But if you can wait on the funds, check out apps like Decluttr, Gazelle, and Swappa. Search for specialized selling platforms to maximize profits if you have niche electronics like box TVs or retro video games.

3. Smartphones

Swappa pays you instantly on phone trade-in values. You can also list them for whatever you deem acceptable and wait until they sell. Best Buy and Target have buyback programs.

As a former cell phone store manager, I recommend only taking a trade-in at your cell carrier if you’re trading in your older device for an upgrade and can’t wait. If you have time to sell your phone for a higher profit, make sure everything is uploaded to the cloud and turn the profit. Then, you’ll have more cash to put toward the new phone or pay for it entirely.

Also, if you buy a phone from places like Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp, or Craigslist, ensure the seller meets you at the carrier store. The store can verify if the phone is paid off, who the service provider is, and if it’s unlocked for all carrier services. I helped save a few people from being scammed.

If the phone isn’t paid off (like on a delinquent account), the carrier will block the IMEI number, rendering it useless on any cellular service network.

4. Exercise Equipment

Do you have any exercise machines or gym equipment lying around collecting dust in your home? It’s a common reality that can be lucrative on secondhand selling platforms. I’ve had the best luck on Facebook Marketplace, and there are always incredible workout equipment scores there, too.

5. Clothing

Do a closet purge and sell gently used clothing items at online consignment stores such as thredUp, Tradesey, and TheRealReal. Do a little research to see which platform will work best for what you have in your closet. For example, high-end designer clothes do well on Poshmark.

6. Designer Bags

Reselling designer handbags can be a little trickier because you need to find a market clientele that appreciates the value of what you’re reselling.

Places like Vestiaire Collective, Ann’s Fabulous Finds, and The Refind Closet are ideal for designer enthusiasts because the bags have been authenticated. So, the money will be better in these markets, but not as fast as taking a hit on your return on other direct-buyer selling platforms that aren’t specialized in bags.

7. Toys

Where you sell your toys depends on what type of toys you’re talking about. If you recycle old toys, your kids are running through and need fast money, check out local baby consignment shops and sell them on Facebook Marketplace. If you have vintage toys, try Etsy and eBay.

8. Baby Items

Baby items have a quick turnover rate. If you’ve kept them gently used, you can make decent money reselling them at baby consignment shops, Facebook Marketplace, and other direct-buyer selling platforms. GoodBuy Gear is a popular online consignment shop that sells open box and gently used baby and kid gear.

9. Tools

Do you have power tools, saws, specialty tools, tool sets, and boxes you hope to turn into fast cash? While you can get immediate money at the pawn shop, they won’t give you anywhere near what you can get on the marketplace or platforms like Sawmill Creek and Garage101.

10. Appliances

Sell kitchen and other household appliances on Craigslist, OfferUp, Facebook Marketplace, and LetGo. Buyers beware: used small appliances like blenders and lamps are on our list of things you should never buy secondhand because they pose a significant fire risk due to old, faulty wiring.

11. Furniture

Furniture is another higher ticket resell item, especially if constructed with real wood. However, you have to find the right market. For example, Facebook is great for quick funds. However, people there want garage sale prices on furniture. Try selling on AptDeco or the NextDoor app to your neighbors.

12. Musical Instruments

Do you have a musical instrument that never gets any play? Sell it on sites such as TheGearPage, Gearspace, and Reverb. Alternatively, there are a couple of subreddits where musicians succeed in selling musical instruments, including r/sellyourpedals and r/gear4sale.

13. Books

Numerous niche book-selling platforms exist to help you maximize reselling profits. Sell used books and textbooks at the online book-buying program BookScouter. Or check out AbeBooks, another popular community. Half Price Books is a brick-and-mortar store that will inspect the condition of your book and then offer you cash immediately.

14. Media

Physical media doesn’t typically sell for much unless it’s a collector’s edition, but you can make some easy money parting with old CD and DVD collections. People with collector vinyl record collections can make nice money, but it’s not a quick transaction. Good luck giving your VHS collection away. Several are worth insane money, but finding a buyer willing to pay $15,000 for Halloween II is not necessarily easy.

15. Medical Equipment

Medical equipment is costly and something people shop for on secondhand platforms. If you have items like walking boots, walkers, and mobility equipment, try OfferUp and LetGo. My sister quickly sold a pair of crutches on Facebook Marketplace.

Start by cleaning up spaces, decluttering corners and closets, and taking inventory of what you don’t need and can sell for quick cash. There are limitless things in your house you can sell. You simply have to find the right platform.
